Back to blogging and back to Rio.....but not travelling
Some of you lucky folk will automatically receive this as an email and others will hunt it out (not sure who!) but welcome back or should I be welcoming myself?
Don't panic I haven't snuck off without telling you that I am off travelling again. I have a fortunate job that takes me to fairly exotic places and was responsible for my first visit here a little under 5 months ago.
It is only as I landed in Rio and was going through the airport racking my brain of the last time I was here that I thought I would blog again
1.It would be useful to put down somewhere the useful things to remember/tips rather than reworking them out
2. It will keep me slightly more sane writing about my time out here and may prove useful
3. I am sure you are all missing me that much, that my blog will be the highlight you look forward
and finally
4. Just because I can!
So, as usual, about 3 days before I left that overwhelming sense of dread begins to build inside me.....I have no idea why and it is a wonder I ever get anywhere abroad.
This usually abates once on the plane but this time it did not.
It was only when the plane bounced down in Rio and the passengers started clapping. I looked out the window at the stunning beauty that is Rio and the man next to me said, with quite possibly the biggest, most excited grin and bright eyes, 'Is this your first time?', that I realized this is amazing. (Ridiculous I know!!!)
I also now reflect back on my last trip here and realized as I lifted my bag into the overhead locker - I am no longer in pain from my collar bone and as I sat down in my airplane seat the wanting to always be stretching my knee out was not there. The difference being not in pain is three fold and it is only now that I realize how that probably tarnished a lot of my travelling
So things to remember when next travelling to Rio
1. Where possible try not to fly with Iberia - weird food, 3 TV screens for 60 people and Madrid airport has nothing to do
2. Take Brazil Reals with you (or worst case US dollars) - the cash points never seem to work at the airport - last time I tried all the floors as well, the exchange places generally don't take British Pounds
3. When going through immigration walk past the long queue that is for the locals....go a little further for the foreigners one- it is much shorter but way way way slower!
4. Taxis are expensive 105 reais this time only 80 last time!
5. Travel plugs- bring every type and in particular the round pins that are skinny not fat?!
6. Doesn't matter if you have been before or not seeing Jesus alight on his hill is still pretty cool!
Be prepared to stay in self catering accommodation where you are given a cooker and microwave but nothing to put your food on or use to make you food!!! But on the plus side free internet to ensure I can entertain the world
Not the most exciting blog.....but I suspect these ones will be more for my benefit not yours!
