Shuffling street and Wellyphants
After my tiger experience I managed to push myself back out of my ridiculously good hostel and head to Saturday walking street. Basically a street full of markets and meant to be a bit more traditional and I finally found what I thought I would see everywhere, weird stuff on sticks-and great food for abut 50p!
Having acquired an old favourite of mine- Milo shake- I thought I would take to walking the street and it became quickly apparent that it was more of a 'shuffling experience' to be had. If you were with someone or a group of people the local art seemed to be to form a snake like group and shuffle along behind each other
Personally I prefer the night bazaar but that is only because I love the jewellery
This morning began my last day in Chiang Mai before I head off to meet up with Lindsey and explore the islands with perhaps a slightly less active regime. So I couldn't leave without seeing the Asian Elephants. They are little bit smaller than the African ones and have rounder backs and only 1 finger on their truncks, which to me behave like a creature in themselves.
The Elephants I went to see are at a Nature Park- you do not ride them and they do not do tricks or shows, most have been rescued from that kind of thing. Many are from the now defunct logging business in Thailand and some rescued from Lao where it is still going on. Some of the stories behind these creatures is very sad- they played a documentary on it on the way there and I was crying in a bus full of strangers. It never fails to amaze me the cruelty that people can inflict on animals
These creatures seem truly content here with a life of, from what I worked out, eating 2500 kg of fruit a day, having a bath a couple times and playing the game of how still can you stand!!!
My Hostel here in Chiang Mai was great it may have sounded like the cars were in the room with you as they drove past - but for £2 for the dorm room- then upgraded to my own room for £6 and dinner costing me a mere £1. I leave with money to burn almost!!! Which I am sure I will do far easier in Phuket, the islands and Patong from what fellow travellers have said.
Speak to you soon....best go catch my plane xx
